Upcycling: Transforming plastic bottles in Eco vases!

In the first Social-Environmental action from EcoHospitality NZ in New Zealand we decided to do an action that could be replicated by people in their homes and thus maximize the benefits of such action.

For this we have developed a free workshop to teach the community to transform plastic bottles, those that we commonly find floating in rivers and in the ocean, in auto-irrigable vases for plants. An action Aiming One of 5 r's of recycling, R of Reuse.

But we couldn´t do it alone, and our first need was a place to do the workshop in order to attract as many people as possible. And for that our first idea was the The Seaside Market, a very cool market with live music, food and gifts stalls that happen every first Sunday of the month in New Plymouth and is well known and visited by the local community.

As we imagined the organizers of the market have been very receptive and even they were without spaces available in the market, they gave us a space for the workshop. We then started to look for partners for our next needs, which were the signals for the workshop, plastic bottles and the saplings.

For the plants we had the help of the Awapuni Nurseries, that sells saplings on the internet and provided us with herbs, so the participants could take home their vases already with the plants.

To give publicity for the workshop we had two partners, About Image that did a really cool job following exactly what we asked for the banner that we used in the Market and our partner and friend Felipe, from Tento Media, who took care of the photos and the amazing video of the workshop.

Obviously we couldn´t make plastic bottle vases without the plastic bottles and for this we resorted to the best person in Taranaki to help us, Steve from Upcycle Taranaki, that in addition of helping with the bottles also helped us during the Market as a volunteer.

Again we would like to thank you all these partners who have made the workshop possible!

Now returning to the workshop, Sunday couldn´t have been better... The weather was great and as we were in the summer the Market was full of people.

During the event, which happened from 09:00am to 02:00pm about 50 people, mostly children, joined us to make their Eco vase.

A very cool event that made us very happy to have been the first of many actions from EcoHospitality NZ to help the environment and the New Zealand community.
